FOURTEEN

“It’s sort of weird, isn’t it?” Heath asked.

They were looking out to the ocean, standing on the central deck. The water was peaceful and unblemished. Any trace of their crashed plane or lurking dinosaurs were nowhere to be seen.

“What’s weird?” Colt asked.

“We’re assuming that we’re floating in the sea a couple hundred million years ago. But the ocean looks the same as it does 2016.”

“Well, with the drastic exception of the marine life,” Colt joked.

Colt actually didn’t find Heath’s observation all that weird, but he knew what Heath meant. Being misplaced out of time in such a way, Colt expected to feel different. But because they were stranded at sea (albeit with extinct monsters lurking in the depths below), nothing really felt all that different.

Aside from the phantom ship they were currently standing on, of course.

“Do you think they’ll come with us?” Nyoko asked Colt.

Colt considered the question for a moment before answering. “I don’t know. I’d like to think so. But Anne looked absolutely horrified at the idea of getting back into the water.”

“They said they were had been out on the sea for their twentieth anniversary,” Heath pointed out. “I think finishing out their lives together in the real world is going to be too much of a lure for them to chicken out and stay here.”

“My God,” Nyoko said. “Can you imagine going through something like that? The strain and the stress, I mean. It’s one of those things that will either draw them closer together or cause a lot of arguments. I feel bad for them.”

Heath looked out to the sea and gave a weak laugh. “Yeah, me too. But I feel a bad for us more than that. Sorry of that sounds selfish.”

“So what about our plan?” Colt asked. “Anyone else nervous about it?”

“Hell yes I am,” Heath said. “Even if we can manage to get the lifeboat in the water easily, that still means that we have to get it to the source of the lights in an hour and a half. Depending on where the lights are—if there are any lights at all—that could be impossible.”

“Yeah, that’s the one flaw I see, too,” Nyoko said.

“One flaw?” Heath asked with a shaky laugh.

“Isn’t this what you signed up for?” Colt asked. “You’re back in the Triangle, trapped again. How does it feel?”

“Not great.”

The sound of footfalls from behind interrupted them. They turned to see the Gellers walking towards them from out of the main doorway back into the ship. They were holding hands, and it looked like Anne had been weeping.

“We talked it out,” Tyler said, “and decided that we’d like to come with you.”

“That’s great,” Colt said.

“But the one thing I ask that you keep in mind,” Tyler said, “is that Anne comes first. No matter what happens when we’re out there or what sort of danger we might face, I’ll rescue Anne before I even think of helping you.”

“And the same goes for me,” Anne said. When she spoke, she would not look them in the eyes.
